Last night, I attended a Nicole Henry jazz performance at a local jazz venue. It was a weekday night and the venue wasn’t nearly as crowded as the last time I was there.
Her performance and the band’s performance were both great. Nicole has a great voice and vocal range. I’m not much of a music critic nor have I had any musical training, but it seems like I’m liking jazz a lot more now than I did before.
The venue, Anthology, is also a great place to see a performance and get a meal. The restaurant/club is one of the few jazz places in San Diego and I think it is the newest and best sounding venues, but that’s based on other comments because I haven’t been to the other venues.
Her current album is ranked number 21 of the Billboards Top Jazz Albums.
…she can sell a power ballad as well as Whitney, Diana and Patti. She serves up a nice surprise. Her Summertime has depth, her Fly Me to the Moon has oomph, and her Over the Rainbow takes flight.

this ingenue can wring even the most forgotten sentiment from a song… with romantic splendor and intimate, enchanting phrasing and nuance…a gentle but powerful voice, pure in tone and pitch. Nicole Henry sings with passion, style, class and charisma while exuding the star power radiating within her.

As I posted just over a year ago, I still continue to wait for my friend to make me a CD of various Jazz samples so I can get a better understanding.
